J.G. Ballard's "Empire Of The Sun": Jim's Metamorphosis
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Interpretive literature encompasses myriad existential elements that directly relate to character development; indeed, it is not merely a compilation of dates and events, but rather it is an exploration of humanity's spiritual side sometimes gone awry. Such is the case with J.G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun, inasmuch as this literary masterpiece shares the common denominator of achieving self-awareness and wholeness so prevalent in war stories. The very process of living life and expanding one's existence has often been perceived as a rebirth of sorts, with Ballard taking the concept to an infinitely high level of appreciation with Jim, his primary character. By embracing this inherent – and often esoteric – power, the reader is able to grasp a significantly better understanding of Jim's developing self-awareness and wholeness. Jade -- Laingzhu and Hongshan: The Perfect Chinese Gentleman:
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page paper examines the extensive use of finely crafted
ritual jade in prehistoric times which has prompted speculation
as to the existence of a “jade age.” Handsome jades from two
neolithic cultures and sites - the Hongshan culture in
northeastern Liaoning Province and the Liangzhu culture of the
more southerly Zhejiang Province around today's Shanghai - attest
to this possibility. The Liangzhu tombs have yielded more than
3,000 jade objects since excavation began there in the mid-1970s.

Japanese Imperialism and Singapore
[ send me this paper ]
This 11 page report
discusses the similarities and differences between the Japanese
“imperialism” or occupation of Singapore and British imperialism
on the island. In Southeast Asia Japanese rule in Singapore was
not so very different than what occurred when French imperialism
governed “Indochina,” the Dutch in Indonesia, or the British rule
in India, Singapore, Hong Kong, or any of its other
“protectorates.” In many ways, the nearly four year occupation of
Singapore by Japan shattered the many assumptions that had been
made over the past century (and more) regarding British authority
and its ability appropriately govern its colonies. Annotated
