Abraham Lincoln: Overcoming Political and Social Obstacles in Order to Preserve the Union and Eliminate Slavery
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing the political and social obstacles Lincoln had to overcome to achieve his goals. After President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 16, 1865, writer Stephen Oates in his book “Abraham Lincoln: The Man Behind the Myths” (1984) said that Lincoln became symbolic to “ministers across the North [who] portrayed the slain President as an American Christ who died to expiate the sins of his guilty land”. While this statement reflects the enormity of the legend for freedom and unity Lincoln would become, his political career was one of controversy as his personal goals to preserve the Union and eliminate slavery were not necessarily popular notions in his day. In fact, many accused him of working against the U.S. Constitution in many of his statements and policies. In addition to the political obstacles he had to overcome, writings from the time also indicate that socially many still regarded him as a third-class citizen within a first-class position; adding to the controversy of his decisions and his ultimate dedication to the preservation of the Union throughout the Civil War and his issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 declaring all slaves were free forever. Despite these obstacles, Lincoln managed to persuade the northern Republicans and Democrats to back his desires for the elimination of slavery in the south while using the tide of controversy from the publication of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and his public speech at the military cemetery at Gettysburg had a great impact on the national notions and approach to freedom and civil equality.

ADA’s Effect on Small Business
[ send me this paper ]
A 23 page paper discussing the effect that the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 has had on small business in costs of compliance. The law originated with good intentions and originally exempted very small businesses from needing to comply in any but the very broadest terms. Since then, however, other “disabilities” such as obesity have gained official recognition as disabilities, and activist groups have sued small business owners to force them into compliance despite the costs and despite lack of complaints by disabled customers or workers. The paper argues that the ADA as it applies to small business is oppressive and imposes undue burden on small businesses. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Alexander Hamilton's Support Of The Federalist Papers
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Alexander Hamilton's argument in support of a unitary executive (the Federalist Papers) originated from his assertion that "energy" represents an essential element in the executive capacity, a component he clearly and staunchly contended was important to good government. To Hamilton, the term energy represented the most critical components of a strong and progressive government, one in which the inherent responsibilities are addressed in an impenetrable yet effective manner. Hamilton argued that decision, activity, secrecy and dispatch are fundamental components to a solid, energetic executive, indicative of what he viewed as the most important political characteristics. The writer discusses how this tendency would affect legislative bodies, but also offers a general overview of this extremely important book, which is cautionary in regards to the rise of fascism within society. Altering Medicare’s Effect on Health Care
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page paper discussing the history, economic effect, regulations and future of Medicare. There is intense and ongoing debate about the future of Medicare, the need for reform and the shape that such reform should take. As politicians haggle over private interests and noble ideals that no one can afford, Medicare’s influence on health care increasingly affects microeconomic choices of households and businesses, as well as the larger national economy. There is no question that Medicare must become more flexible. Its micro- and macroeconomic effect is detrimental to the health care industry, to the national economy and to individuals seeking health care services. The paper suggests that Medicare allow the private sector to drive reform of the system. Includes an outline. Bibliography lists 11 sources.
