Mainstream America’s View of Its Latino Population
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper discussing American perceptions toward Latinos. Hispanics represent the fastest-growing ethnic group in America. Their numbers are expected to exceed that of African-Americans by 2005, and it is expected that by the year 2050 they will represent fully 25 percent of the total American population. Marketers have discovered the
purchasing power of the Latino population and have made demographic "discoveries" of the family values and unity that characterize much of this group that actually represents at least 17 different subcultures. Individual contact and a diminishing language barrier are seen as keys to furthering the trend of increasing favorable view of this group as a whole. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

"Blaming the Victim" by William Ryan
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. A review of the book by William Ryan in which he focuses on the fact that society tends to place the blame of societal ills on those people who are actually victims of society as well. For instance, rather than placing blame on those who live in abject poverty and unable to get off the welfare roles, perhaps we should look to their surroundings first and see where the blame really lies. Ryan makes a good point in discussing the ‘slum lords’ at one point. Instead of blaming the people who live in filthy conditions in the slums, perhaps we should first take a look at the slum itself.
